A few months ago, our friends over at SmartSTEMs began putting together a library of short educational videos featuring professionals talking about their jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). The purpose of the campaign (called "#MyJob, #MyJourney") was to help schoolkids learn about the variety of jobs available in the STEM sector, what those jobs involve on a day to day basis, and the various journeys people have taken to reach where they are today.
We were asked if we would like to get involved and, of course, we jumped at the chance to help out!
Our Digital Marketing Manager, Michael, put together a short video about his role as a Digital Marketer, and the use of technology in marketing, which went live in March. If you would like to see it, you can view the video here.
Over the last few weeks, the SmartSTEMs team have been running virtual events with schools across Scotland and Michael has been attending for live Q&A's with the kids to answer questions about digital marketing, video game development and architecture! Oh! Did we mention Michael has developed and launched seven video games and has a BSc (Bachelor of Sciences) in Architecture!
The #MyJob, #MyJourney Campaign has impacted hundreds of schoolkids so far, and with more events planned over the next month it's safe to say that the SmartSTEMs team are doing a fantastic job in helping young people learn more about, and become excited by, careers in STEM!
"Attending the virtual events with the schools has been incredibly fun! The kids have been full of questions and really enthusiastic, and from a quick show of hands from the classes you can see there is a genuine interest there for technical subjects, which is really awesome! Emma Bodiam and Karen Murray have done an excellent job of both hosting the events and keeping the kids engaged throughout, so kudos to them for all their hard work!" - Michael
What is the best question you have been asked by a student?
"Hmm... There was a P7 student who asked me for my best tip for becoming a successful social media marketer. I thought that was quite an impressive question. My answer was quite simple: become comfortable with filming, scripting and editing videos because video content is key! I went into a little more detail on the subject but that was the general gist.
I have also been asked how long it takes to make video games, what specific hardware I use (admittedly a few jaws hit the floor when I panned my webcam over my Alienware PC), and what subjects are needed to get a job as a digital marketer, a video game developer, or as an architect. All of which I thought were excellent questions!" - Michael
What is the most random question you have been asked?
"Well, there was one kid who asked me if I was vegan... but I wasn't sure where in the class he was sitting so I couldn't tell if he was disappointed in me when I told him that I love plants but I do also eat meat. I was a little worried I was going to get a class-wide 'GASP!' when I answered, but nobody seemed to get offended so I think I got away with it haha!" - Michael
